Clear aligner trays have become increasingly popular over the last several years, with the most well-known brand being Invisalign.
The clear plastic trays are custom-fabricated in a lab and apply gentle pressure to the teeth to shift them into a more favorable position. Trays are changed every 1-2 weeks, depending upon the teeth’s movement and patient’s dedication to consistent wear.
Depending upon a patient’s dental needs, clear aligners may need to be supplemented with traditional orthodontic treatment in order to obtain desired results.
A common question we receive when patients are exploring the use of clear aligners to shift the position of their teeth is whether or not aligners cause cavities. After all, the aligners fit over the entire surface of the tooth and can hold food particles and bacteria in place.
Maintaining good oral hygiene habits is more important than ever when undergoing orthodontic treatment – daily flossing, brushing twice a day, and regular dental cleanings and checkups are imperative. It’s also important to keep the aligner trays clean and store them in a clean case when not in use. Aligners should always be removed when eating or drinking, and if possible, brush your teeth before putting in your aligners.
