Improve the look and function of your natural teeth with a dental crown.
Dental crowns (also referred to as “caps”) or onlays are fabricated “teeth” that fit over the natural tooth to restore both aesthetics and function. Crowns are typically used when the remaining tooth structure is not capable of adequately supporting or retaining a regular filling. The crown also helps hold together the remaining tooth structure to minimize the chance of a tooth fracture.
The crowns we place at JA Haselhorst DDS are typically either ceramic or zirconia. Ceramic crowns look natural and are durable enough for normal use, whereas zirconia are slightly more durable for heavy chewing. Other materials used may be metal alloys, porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal.
After decay and old filling material is removed, the tooth is prepared (or shaped) to make room for the crown. Next, a digital scan is completed and sent to the lab to fabricate the crown and a temporary acrylic crown is placed to preserve the tooth and gums. It is important that the temporary crown stay on the tooth, as the prepared tooth could move, causing the need for re-preparation and possibly a new impression.
Once the permanent crown has been fabricated, the crown is fitted and cemented. The entire procedure is done in the office in a series of visits.
It is possible that you will experience some sensitivity after a crown placement, but this is usually temporary. Many crowns fit below the gumline, so irritation, sensitivity to cold, and some minor pressure may occur.
After final cementation, it may take a few days to get used to the crown. After a few days, it you feel that your bite is off, please call us at 630.420.0013 to come in for an adjustment.
Proper oral hygiene is very important with a crown, as it does not eliminate the possibility of decay along the edges of the crown. It is also possible that the tooth could need root canal therapy after the crown is placed (though it is unlikely this is as a result of the crown placement). Fortunately, root canal therapy can be done through the top of the crown without damaging the crown itself.
