Gentle Extractions for Lasting Comfort

When necessary, tooth extractions can be life-changing.

Tooth Extractions Are a Last Resort

Restoring and repairing your teeth, whenever possible, is always our first priority. There are times, however, when a tooth is too badly damaged from an accident, abuse, or neglect to be able to be repaired. Keep in mind that your teeth should not be used to open bottles, tear open packages, or crack nuts, as this type of abuse may eventually crack the teeth. Poor dental hygiene will result in periodontal disease which can cause enough bone loss that teeth need to be extracted.

The exception? Wisdom teeth (which really are not so wise). It is often recommended to remove wisdom teeth prior to adulthood because the roots have not yet fully formed and the bone is softer.

How Are Teeth Extracted?

Most teeth are able to be safely removed in our office with local anesthetic and possibly mild sedation such as nitrous oxide (see below for more information about nitrous oxide). If it is a more complex situation that requires general sedation, we will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon who will perform the procedure.

When done in office, we will initially apply a topical numbing agent to the gums, then inject a local anesthetic. After just a few minutes, the site should be completely numb, and Dr. Joe will check to be sure before beginning the procedure. You will feel pressure during the extraction, but you should not feel pain. The entire process is relatively brief – only about 30 minutes, including numbing.

What Should I Expect After a Tooth Extraction?

Most simple extractions do not cause much discomfort after the procedure, but you should exercise caution while talking, eating, and drinking until the local anesthetic has worn off. Surgical extractions are more complicated, and the severity and length of discomfort depend upon the difficulty of the extraction.
