An Extra Layer of Protection

Fluoride and sealants are a great defense for your teeth!

What Are Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has fantastic cavity-fighting properties thanks to its ability to strengthen enamel, remineralize enamel, and inhibit bacterial growth.

Many of us know that fluoride treatments are often recommended for children, but there are plenty of situations in which adults may benefit from fluoride, as well. If you’ve lost salivary function, have a disability or injury that may prevent you from brushing as well, or have a tendency to develop caries (cavities), fluoride treatments may be recommended as part of your treatment plan.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are liquid coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth to prevent bacteria and food from becoming trapped in the grooves and potentially causing dental caries (cavities). The sealant is made of either resin or glass ionomer. It is applied in a thin layer to a back tooth’s chewing surface and cured to form a hard shield.

Dr. Joe may recommend dental sealants for children as their premolars and permanent molars come in to protect them from cavities. Adults often benefit from sealants, as well, if they have deeply grooved teeth, loss of salivary function, or a variety of other risk factors that may lead to the development of cavities.

What Should I Do After Having a Fluoride Treatment or Sealant Application?

After a fluoride treatment, wait an hour or so to eat or drink anything. For the first 12 hours after either a fluoride treatment or sealant application, avoid eating or drinking anything very hot (like coffee or tea), and refrain from eating crunchy and sticky foods. You can resume normal eating and drinking habits after that time.
