Keep Periodontal Disease at Bay

Once periodontal disease is diagnosed, regular maintenance is important.

Why Do I Need Periodontal Maintenance?

Just as periodontal disease didn’t happen overnight, treating it is a process rather than an event. After scaling, root planing, and/or periodontal surgery, regular follow-up appointments and maintenance are critical to the keep gums healthy and prevent bone loss. While early stage periodontal disease (gingivitis) is often reversable, mid- to late-stage periodontal disease is managed rather than cured.

It is also at these appointments that you will work with Dr. Joe to create an at-home oral health regimen to keep periodontal disease from progressing further. Everyone’s situation is slightly different, so it is important to come up with a plan that works for you.

What Is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance recall visits are more frequent than regular checkups and cleanings, typically every 3-4 months. During these appointments, the depths of gum pockets will be evaluated, and scaling and root planing may be required. Additionally, antibiotic irrigation may be performed.

This regular maintenance is a necessary step once periodontal disease is diagnosed to lessen the likelihood of further gum tissue damage, bone loss, and possible tooth loss. It is important to note that, while rare, some extreme cases do not respond to periodontal disease interventions, resulting in ultimate bone and/or tooth loss.
